Khub Kachher is Ventures’ first production. It’s a Bengali play, adapted from a play by Somerset Maugham, by a renowned Bengali Playwright, Tirthankar Chanda. It was staged at Jagriti Theatre on 8th, 9th and 10th of May 2015 as detailed below. Ventures, which started from passion and fun, as a weekend theatre activity platform, turned into a longer term serious endeavour, thanks to overwhelming response from the audience.
Synopsis:
The story revolves around the lively and vibrant Mrinmoy who was terminally crippled by an accident, soon after his marriage with Urmi and left with minimum life expectancy. It was a miracle that he had survived. However, he has remained mentally strong and vibrant, energetic and instinctive, enthusiastic and entertaining, despite his physical problems. Urmi has always remained by him, presenting herself the way Mrinmoy wanted, i.e. exactly how she was when they first got married. Mrinmoy is assisted by a professional nurse, Ranjana, who takes care of his daily needs and demands. Mrinmoy’s mother, Mrs Sanyal, has brought up her two sons, single handedly, after her husband had passed away. Tanmoy, Mrinmoy’s younger brother, lives in the Northeast, but is close to the family. Dr Tarafdar, a medical doctor by profession, and Major Lahiri, a retired police officer, are family friends. All of them, except Tanmoy, were together on an evening. Next day morning Mrinmoy passes away while in sleep. Ranjana questions Mrinmoy’s death as she does not believe, it was natural. The story turns into a mystery and finally drives a deep philosophy challenging the conventional social outlook.
